A1 and A2 are two types of beta-casein proteins found in milk, which is a type of protein found in cow's milk. The difference between A1 and A2 milk is a single amino acid substitution in the beta-casein protein.

A1 milk contains the A1 beta-casein protein, which is associated with the production of a peptide called beta-casomorphin-7 (BCM-7) during digestion. Some studies have suggested that BCM-7 may cause inflammation and discomfort in some people, and may be associated with an increased risk of certain health issues, such as heart disease, type 1 diabetes, and autism.

A2 milk, on the other hand, contains the A2 beta-casein protein, which does not produce BCM-7 during digestion. Some studies have suggested that A2 milk may be easier to digest and may be associated with a lower risk of certain health issues.

Who produces A1 Milk?

A1 milk is produced by some breeds of cows, such as Holstein, Friesian, and Ayrshire. These breeds of cows have a genetic variation in the beta-casein protein that results in the production of the A1 beta-casein protein. These breeds are commonly used in commercial dairy farming in many countries around the world, including the United States, Australia, and most of Europe. Out of this, you find some European breeds in India.

It's important to note that not all cows produce A1 milk, and some breeds of cows, such as Guernsey and Jersey, are known to produce milk that is primarily or exclusively A2. Additionally, some cows may produce milk that contains a mix of A1 and A2 beta-casein proteins, and the proportion of each may vary depending on factors such as the cow's diet and genetics.

According to ICAR-Central Institute for Research on Cattle, Meerut 250 001, Uttar Pradesh who published a research paper, Indigenous breeds of cows and buffaloes are of A2 milk type and hence are a source for safe milk. The A1/A2 status of cattle is determined by the two alleles for beta-casein gene i.e. A1 and A2cattle may be homozygous for one type of protein (A1A1 or A2A2), or heterozygous (A1A2). A1A1 cattle would produce only A1 milk, A2A2 would produce only A2 milk and A1A2 cattle would produce milk with both A1 and A2 beta - caseins. NBAGR also reported moderate to high frequency of A2 allele among the breeding bulls, further supporting the belief that milk being sold in India is safe for human consumption. Considering the lack of concrete scientific evidence forA1/BCM-7 ill-effects on human health, and predominance of A2 milk in Indian cattle there is no need to move to A2 only.
